The human brain is close to a memory. It’s where you keep your data and instructions. Computer memory refers to the storage space within a computer where data and instructions to be processed are stored.
This is the unit where the data and results are stored. The major function of this unit is to remember the instruction and data. The data can be accessed and used by the CPU whenever it is required for processing. This unit consists of cells which are capable of storing a unit of information.
Types of Memory
- Primary Memory/ Main Memory – The memory which is directly connected to the computer is called Primary Memory or Main Memory. Only the data and instructions for which the machine is actually running are stored in primary memory. It has a limited capacity. The majority of it is made up of semiconductor devices. The main memory stores the data and instructions that must be interpreted.
Types of primary memory-
- RAM
- ROM
- Secondary Memory – This form of memory is also known as non-volatile memory or external memory. It operates at a slower rate than the main memory. These are used to store data and information indefinitely. These memories are not accessed directly by the CPU; instead, they are accessed by input-output routines. The contents of secondary memories are first moved to main memory, where they can then be accessed by the CPU. For instance, a disk, a CD-ROM, a DVD, and so on.
