What is B.Com?
Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) is one of the most popular undergraduate courses in India. Students who opt for B.Com are often looking to pursue careers in the corporate and finance world, since the course is heavily geared towards preparing students’ professional skills in these fields. It is a three year course offered by most universities and colleges in the country, and can conveniently be completed in either the regular or distance education mode.
B.Com Course Details
The B.Com course details include core subjects related to commerce and finance, as well as skill-based elective subjects spread out over six semesters. Many B.Com courses today have also integrated course material from professional examinations such as the Chartered Accountancy examination into their syllabi in order to help students excel, since most students attempt these examinations alongside their Bachelor’s course or soon after.
B.Com graduates often pursue postgraduate courses such as Master of Commerce (M.Com) or Master of Business Administration (MBA), and become eligible for careers in fields such as banking, investment consultancy, fund management, KPOs (Knowledge Process Outsourcing), finance department of any organisation, and so on. Thus, B.Com is highly valued as a course which trains students for the professional world.
B.Com Eligibility
Since B.Com is a popular and widely offered course, most universities do not require an entrance exam. However, certain institutions such as Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Sciences (NMIMS), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, and Patna Women’s College, hold entrance examinations for B.Com and B.Com (Hons.) courses.
For institutions which do not require entrance examinations, the eligibility criteria are quite straightforward, although the specifics may vary slightly from college to college. Broadly they are as follows:
- The student must have passed the higher secondary examination (12th standard or equivalent) from a recognized board such as ISC, CBSE, IGCSE, IB, NIOS, or the official higher secondary board of any Indian state.
- Many colleges require the student to have scored at least 50% marks in the higher secondary examinations.
- The student must have met the minimum cut-off for the college applied to. The minimum cut-off for admission varies from college to college. Top colleges usually require a score of 90% or above, while others may require 70% and above.
- Students from commerce, science and arts backgrounds may apply, although a few colleges may prefer students from commerce backgrounds.
B.Com Subjects
In many colleges, the Bachelor of Commerce subjects change from semester to semester. Each one consists of certain core papers which are foundational to understanding commerce and finance concepts, along with certain elective papers which are discipline-specific and skill-based, covering the practical side of things. Therefore, B.Com courses tend to balance textbook learning with real-life application in order to prepare students for professional life.
The subjects offered and the organisation of the course may vary across colleges and universities. However, the following list gives a general idea of the semester-wise list of subjects, including optional subjects which students will have to choose from depending on how many the university has to offer:
