The Work Breakdown structure in Project management is a method in which we can divide large projects into small steps to get things done faster and more efficiently.
The objective of the work breakdown structure is to make large project more manageable.
Breaking large projects in small steps means the work can be done simultaneously by different members which will increase team productivity and will make project management easy.
WBS is utilized to-
- Break activities into smaller tasks
- Identify the phases of activities, including milestones tasks which indicate completion of each phase.
- Sequence the tasks
- Estimate the duration of tasks
- Identify the needed resources for each task
- Schedule the task
- Estimate the resource cost
Benefits of Work breakdown structure:
- WBS allows the project manager to allocate budgets to the top level of the structure.
- Departmental WBs allows faster estimation of departmental budgets.
- WBS provides allocation of time and cost estimates based on which the project schedule and budgets can be developed.
- It allows the tracking of the project cost performance and identification of issues and problem areas in project management.
- We can use WBS to identify potential risks in the project. We can track these risks and reviewed during the execution of the project.
- We can use WBS to identify communication points and formulate a communication plan across the projects.
- If there is a delay in the execution of project sub deliverables the WBS will allow the project manager to identify the major deliverables that will be impacted.
